In 2008/09, Boston University consumed 209 million kWh of electricity, enough to power 20,000 homes for one year. The average person at BU accounts for 17kWh of electricity consumed per day. According to NSTAR, 29% of energy use in non-residential buildings is used for lighting.
If you turn off the lights whenever you leave a room, you can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 0.15 pounds per hour. If everyone at Boston University turned off one light, for one hour a day, for one year, we could save 733,475 kWh per year, the equivalent of removing 97 cars (or 1,161,000 pounds of CO2) from the road for an entire year.

Based on a 2008 survey, the average BU student consumes 1.15 kWh/day in their dorm room. An energy reduction of 20% can easily be achieved by turning off computers and unplugging “phantom” devices like printers, iPod and phone chargers, and external hard drives. Use a “smart” power strip that will automatically switch these devices off when your computer is turned off.
- Turn Off the Lights is a lightweight and useful add-in designed for a more comfortable watching experience. It works for all known video sites such as YouTube.
- Turn the 'Dome Override' button on and off twice. On some trucks, doing so will turn off the running lights, but you will need to do this each time you start the vehicle. This solution however, does not work on all vehicles.
